Crestwood boys basketball team began this week of competition with a 10-3 record overall.

The battle between Crestwood and Hazleton Area, the top teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1, ended with the Comets’ coming up short. The 60-57 loss is Crestwood’s first in the WVC.

On Friday, January 17, the Comets entered the Cougars’ den where the teams had the fans on their feet as they battled back and forth for four exciting quarters. The lead changed hands several times during the contest.

Crestwood edged Hazleton by two points in the opening quarter, but Hazleton came back to end the half up by one. Going into the final quarter, Crestwood had a one-point edge but the Cougars managed to make their final shot opportunities count for the win.

Chris Fazzini led the Crestwood

scoring attack with 14 points. Brian Markowski and Luke Casey each tossed in 12.

Also helping on the scoreboard for the Comets were Cole Wasco with six, Brady Gallagher added five, and J. Dotzel chipped in three.

Crestwood squeaked past visiting Pittston Area en route to a 36-33 win on January 14.

A balanced team scoring effort kept the Comets in front for three quarters of the game. Fazzini and Gallagher paced Crestwood with 10 points each. Casey followed with four while Wasco and Markowski chipped in three points apiece.

Hopkins, Malkemes and Rojas rounded out the scoring with points each.


The Crestwood girls basketball team began the week at the top of the WVC Division 1 standings with a 9-4 overall record.

Crestwood recorded a 52-45 win over visiting Abington Heights on January 18.

Led by Maddie Ritsick who had a double-double with a game high 24 points and 13 rebounds, the lady Comets led the contest from start to finish.

Rebecca Rutkowski followed with 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Maury Cronauer added seven points along with seven assists and three steals. Ferdinand helped out with six points while Taryn Wojnar tossed in three.

On January 16, Crestwood lost a heartbreaker to visiting Hazleton Area, 63-60.


After an even three quarters of play, the lady Cougars pulled away in the final quarter to seal the win.

For the lady Comets, Ritsick scored 27 points in a stellar offensive performance. Rutkowski followed with 17 and Wojnar added 13.

Crestwood edged host Pittston Area, 50-47, to capture an exciting win on January 13.

The lady Comets started off strong, taking a 27-16 lead into the final half of play. Pittston turned on the heat in the final period but it was too little too late as the lady Comets walked off the floor with an impressive victory.

Ritsick powered the lady Comets scoring with 23 points. Rutkowski added 10, followed by Cronauer with six, Dallas Kendra, 5, Abbie Macko, three and Wojnar, two.
