emmanuel-ucc. org. Raising Songs Of Praise

Announces Weekly Schedule Ask anyone to name the parts of a worship service and you’ll get basically the same answers. Prayers, sermon, offering, and, oh yea, those songs. Referred to as hymns, this style of music is specifically for praising God and using

in worship services. The word originated from the Greek hymnos, meaning song of praise. The Christians continued the practice of singing praise to God from the Jewish tradition of singing psalms. In fact, the Book of Psalms in the Bible was a sort of hymnal for worship in the Temple of Jerusalem. Over 65 verses in Psalms includethe word“ sing”. “ But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever singforjoy.” (5: 11) “ Sing praises to the Lord, O you his faithful ones, and give thanks to hisholyname.” ( 30: 4) And if those two aren’t enough encouragement, there’s Psalm47: 6, “ Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our

King, sing praises.” Then, of course, heaven and naturejoin in ( remind you of aChristmas carol?). “ The meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing togetherforjoy.” (65: 13) “ Let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest singforjoy. (96: 12) “ Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing togetherforjoy.” ( 98: 8) Taking these words of encouragement to heart, we will celebrate and joyfully sing to our glorious God on Sunday, December 29, with a hymn sing during

our worship service. Come join us in followingPaul’s instruction: “ with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songsto God.”(
