Jr. Bird Watch Starts 2014 Season With Eagle Watch

Since 2009, Nescopeck State Park, with support from the Greater Wyoming Valley Audubon Society, has coordinated a Junior Bird Club for children ages 9 and up! Meetings have included local bird walks at Nescopeck State Park as well as many field trips to favorite bird watching areas such as Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area.

In addition to bird watching, the group has also participated in many other adventures including geocaching, kayaking, and mountain biking. The program was also featured at the annual PA Society of Ornithology meeting held last spring in Wilkes-Barre.

The group is seeking new members to join in the fun. Bird watching experience is not needed, only a desire to enjoy the outdoors, make new friends, and visit some extraordinary places in Northeastern PA. Binoculars and field guides are not necessary as participants may borrow items from the park during meetings.

The Jr. Bird Club is open to children ages 9 and up. Meetings are bi-monthly and take place at Nescopeck State Park and other local birding hot spots. Nescopeck State Park is located near Drums and Mountain Top, between Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre.

Our first adventure for the new-year will be a Bald Eagle Watching Adventure set for Saturday, January 4, 2014 starting at 9am. After a short introduction to the bird club, the group will travel to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The program will last until 4pm. Participants should plan on bringing a lunch and snacks.

Registration is required by calling the Park Office at (570) 403-2006. There is a one-time-only fee of $5 per member.
