Wilkes University awarded the John J. Chwalek Memorial Scholarship to Nimi Patel of Mountain Top, during the recent Blue and Gold Brunch held Oct. 6 during Homecoming Weekend.
The scholarship was created to recognize the love for Wilkes and concern for others exemplified by John J. Chwalek during his forty years of service at Wilkes. It is awarded to a current senior who demonstrates leadership qualities both on campus and in the community, has motivated others and has exhibited potential for success.
Patel has a triple major in criminology, psychology and sociology and is completing five minors. She recently completed an internship at the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
She also participates in Wilkes’ E-mentor program, the Women Empowered by Science camp, the Adventures in Science program and the University’s peer tutoring program. Patel also leads the Criminology/Sociology Club as president and is head ambassador of Wilkes’ Ambassador Program.
In the community, Patel also volunteers with Relay for Life and Geisinger Health Systems.
She has attended Wilkes with her older sister, Bhumi, a 2012 alumna, and her twin sister Nikki.
