Crestwood earned a berth in next week’s District 2 Class 3A playoffs with the Comets’ 35-21 win over the Coughlin Crusaders last Saturday evening in Wilkes-Barre.
Coughlin stayed close but Crestwood (9-1) always had an answer, never giving up the lead throughout the game. The Comets ground out 334 yards on 34 rushes while a stingy Crestwood defense held Coughlin to 174 rushing yards.
One of the many highlights of the Comets’ performance was an exciting 90-yard touchdown in the third quarter by Tanner Kahlau that kept Crestwood in the lead while deflating their opponents. The defensive line for Crestwood opened up holes all night for their backs.
Frank Aigeldinger scored Crestwood’s first touchdown of the game in the opening quarter on a 14-yard run. Despite and ankle injury that he sustained in action last week, Aigeldinger led the Comets in rushing gaining 165 yards on 13 carries.
Connor Sheloski added six more in the first quarter on a 28-yard pass completion to increase the Comets’ lead and close out the opening stanza, 14-0.
Coughlin got back in the game in the second quarter when quarterback Tim Pilch hit Darik Johnson on a 32-yard pass completion to ignite Crusaders’ offense and put seven on the board.
But Crestwood increased the lead to 21-14 at the start of the final quarter on two scores by quarterback Jay Popson to put the game out of reach. Popson scored on 8 and 30-yard touchdown runs.
Kicker George Gendler was perfect on five point after attempts.
Popson rushed for 99 yards on 13 carries and was 5-8-1-98 in passing. Sheloski pulled down three passes for 75 yards.
Crestwood (9-1) will travel to Berwick where they will take on the Bulldogs (10-0) in the D2 Class 3A semifinal game on Saturday, November 9 at 1 pm. Crestwood’s only loss of the 2013 campaign came against Berwick in the opening game of the season.
