Matthew Wascavage

College Student

Matthew Edward Wascavage, 18, Deer Run Drive, Mountain Top, died on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, after a courageous lifelong battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Matthew was born on Dec. 1, 1994 in Arkhangelsk, Russia. He was the son of George Gerard and Patricia Ann Gritsko Wascavage. He was a graduate of Crestwood High School, Class of 2013, and was currently a freshman at King’s College, Wilkes-Barre. He was an Honors student throughout his entire academic career. Matthew was a member of St. Jude Parish, Mountain Top, and a member of their youth group. He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 60, Mountain Top.

Matthew enjoyed hanging out with his brother, Kevin, and cousin Michael and all his friends, playing video games, following many sports and was an avid Yankees, Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Penn State football super fan.

Matthew enjoyed life to its fullest and he never complained; he was a true hero and a role model to anyone who had the honor to know him.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Edward J. Gritsko; paternal grandparents, Michael F. and Mary H. Dzurisin Wascavage.

Matthew is survived by his parents, George and Patti Wascavage; his brother, Kevin Wascavage; his maternal grandmother, Arlene Gritsko; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and Molly, his Golden Retriever.

Margaret “Midge” Pruce

White Haven Resident

Margaret “Midge” Pruce, 72, White Haven, died on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at her residence with her loving and caring family surrounding her.

Born in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 22, 1940, she was a daughter of the late Joseph T. Powell, Sr., and Cecilia Gibney. Margaret was a devoted wife to her childhood sweetheart, Paul Carl Pruce Sr., whom she married on Nov. 26, 1959. They had two wonderful sons they raised in Glenn Oaks, White Haven.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband, Paul Carl Pruce Sr.; brother John Covell and sister Eileen Tipton.

Margaret will be greatly missed; however, her light will continue to shine on.

A private memorial service will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no public viewing. McCune Funeral Home, Mountain Top, is assisting with arrangements.

Bertha S. Zearfoss

Former Resident

Bertha S. Zearfoss, 73, wife of William J. Zearfoss of Douglassville, died on Tuesday, October, 29, 2013 in her residence.

Born in Mountain Top, she was a daughter of the lateAlice E. (Krapf) Myers and Lester J. Stout.

Bertha was employed at Penhurst Hospital as an aid and retired as a supervisor after 20 years. Later she worked in retail at Pomeroy’s.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Z. wife of Hunter Matthews of Lower Pottsgrove Twp., sons, Harry E. II husband of Melanie Zearfoss and William J., Jr. husband of Vicki Zearfoss of Boyertown, sisters, Kathleen Majka of Gilbertsville and Carol Lynn Miniger of Earlington, brothers, Wilbur Stout of Boyertown and Lester Stout of Pottstown. Bertha is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 great granddaughters.
