Lawrence O. Evans, 73, Slocum, died Thursday, March 14, 2013, at Smith Health Care Ltd., Mountain Top.

Born in rural Berwick on April 4, 1939, he was a son of the late Lawrence O. Evans Sr. and Ada Mae Crawford Evans. He graduated from Berwick High School and served in the U. S. Army from Jan. 3, 1962 to Dec. 5, 1963 with the Maintenance Battalion 5th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. He retired from HPG., Mountain Top, and then went to Rinehimer Bus Co., Slocum. He really liked driving the school bus.

He was a member of Sylvania Lodge 354 F & AM, Shickshinny, Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg. His favorite vacation spot was Chincoteague Island, Va., and going to auctions and flea markets. His favorite eats were fried chicken.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Ida Mae Whitenight; and stepbrother, Ronald Smith.

Lawrence will be remembered by his wife of 46 years, the former Carol Yeager; daughter, Amanda Evans and companion, Gregory Drum, Slocum; sister, Anna Mae Banks; mother-in-law, Nellie Yeager, Mountain Top; his pup, Peanut; niece, Denise Farver; sister-in-law, Yvonne Smith; stepbrother, Richard Banks; and nephew, Thomas Banks.

A celebration of life memorial was held in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 316 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top. Revs. Michelle Kaufman and Scott Ryan presided.

Helen Irene McGovern

Active at St. Jude’s

Helen Irene McGovern, 90, Mountain Top, Sunday, March 17, 2013, at The Meadows in Dallas.

Born in Mountain Top, she was the daughter of the late John F. and Helen (Berilla) McGovern. Helen graduated from Fairview High School in 1941. She was a member of St. Jude’s Church in Mountain Top and a member of its Altar and Rosary Society. Helen was a member of the Mountain Top Social Group and worked as a group leader for the Dana Perfume Corporation for 32 years.

Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were her brothers, Thomas, John (Sam), Leonard (Butch), William and Hubert McGovern.

The last surviving member of her immediate family, Helen is survived by the following nieces and nephews, William McGovern, Md.; Marilyn Slabinski, Conn.; John McGovern; Kathleen Jolley, Mountain Top; Mary Ellen Wetzel, Drums; Marie

M. Dougherty, Shavertown; Michael

J. McGovern, Mass.; and Atty. Catherine A. McGovern, Freeland. Several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

The funeral was held from the McCune Funeral Home, 80 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the St. Jude’s Church. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Prakashchandra Jethva

Mountaintop Resident

Prakashchandra Jethva, 46, Mountain Top died March 22, 2013, at home.

Born in Ahmedabad, India, he was the son of the late Mohanlal B. and Kamalaben Parmar Jethva. Dr. Jethva was a pediatrician in India.

Surviving are his wife, Jignya R Patel Jethva; son, Janak P Jethva; brothers, Bhupatbhai M Jethva, Dinesh M Jethva; sisters, Chandrikaben M. Jethva, Madhuben M. Jethva.

Funeral services were held at Maple Hill Cemetery Chapel.

Arrangements were by Yeosock Funeral Home, 40 S Main St., Plains Township.

Jean K. Gittens

Former Resident

Jean K. Gittens, Bushkill, formerly of Drums and Mountain Top, died March 21, 2013, at the VNA Hospice in East Stroudsburg.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Morgan W. Gittens; her parents, August and Laura (Christman) Kuehn; and brother, William Kuehn.

Surviving are her son, Gary Gittens and wife, Linda; granddaughters, Jessica and Rachel Gittens; brothers, Linford and Ernest Kuehn, Drums; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life was held at the Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Mountain Top.

Memorial donations may be made to the youth group of Emanuel UCC or to the VNA Hospice of East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.
