Crestwood suffered its first loss of the season last Friday evening to visiting Coughlin. Both sides battled to a 7-7 tie until the fourth quarter when two scores by the Crusaders was the difference in the Comets’ 27-14 loss.
Crestwood had a strong first half on offense, responding to the first score of the game by the Crusaders with a touchdown of their own as Comet Nick Grosek raced 23 yards. A successful point after by Garret Swank tied the score with 6:35 to end the first quarter.
Crestwood pulled out in front in the second quarter on a 12-yard pass completion to Brandon Niemenski from quarterback Chase Passman. The Comets defense kept the Crusaders in check to close out the first half with a 14-7 lead.
Coughlin answered the score with 16 seconds left in the third on a 4-yard pass from Garrett Wardle to Salem Diop to put the Crusaders to knot the score at the end of the third.
The Coughlin offense came on strong late in the game for two more scores to put the game out of reach for Crestwood.
On the day, the Comets had 296
yards while the Crusaders amassed 281.
Grosek was the leading rusher for the Comets with 93 yards on 10 carries while Patrick Rother carried the ball 11 times for 44 yards.
In passing, Passman was 13-25-2 for 118 yards. Brandon Brozena caught three passes for 41 yards.
Crestwood will travel to Berwick on Friday, September 15. Kickoff is 7 p. m.
