Crestwood lost to visiting Pittston Area, 42-39, in the opening round of the Wyoming Valley Conference District 2 Class 3A boys basketball tournament February 16. It was a disappointing loss for the Comets (16-7) who were seeded fourth.
Crestwood led by a point in the opening quarter but a strong second by Pittston had the Patriots up 25-15 at the half. Crestwood came on strong in the final stanza but fell short as the clock ran out.
Josh Malkemes put up 143 points to lead Crestwood in scoring, followed by Lance Blass with nine.
Also contributing to the Comets’ scoring effort were Robbie Hopkins with five, Mendell Foreman tossed in four, and Brandon Schmidt added three. Jason Klusewitz chipped in with two pints while Kyle Richards and Kyle Gegaris each had one.
The Crestwood girls fared better in their D2 Class 3A game against Hanover Area on February 17, as the Lady Comets cruised to a 61-43 victory.
Maddie Ritsick powered the Crestwood scoring attack with 25 points, three of which went in from beyond the arc. Abby Macko and Sarah Hopkins both turned in a strong offensive performances with 11 points each.
Also scoring for the Lady Comets were Julia Makowski and Andrea Shipton with five apiece, while Kate Snipas and Emily Shiplett each tossed in two.
Crestwood came up short against Nanticoke Area in the quarterfinals on February 19 to fall by a score of 56-42.
Julia Makowski and Ritsick led Crestwood with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Macko put eight points on the board.
Also adding to the Lady Comets’ tally were Shiplett with four, Hopkins, three, Dillon, two, and Shipton, two.
