John A. Macri Jr., 77, Mountain Top, died Nov. 14, 2015, in the care of Celtic Healthcare Hospice inpatient unit at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre.
Born April 12, 1938, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son to the late John A. and Jean E. (Oney) Macri formerly of the Heights section of the city.
Educated in the city schools, he was a member of the 1956 graduating class of the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial High School, Wilkes-Barre, and furthered his education by attaining an associates degree from the former Wilkes College.
Prior to finishing his education, Mr. Macri proudly served our country with the United States Army.
Until his retirement, he had been employed in transportation logistics for St. Johnsbury Trucking Company of Wilkes-Barre Township as well as the local railroad industry. Most recently, he served as a nurse’s aid at White Haven Center.
He and his beloved wife, the former Carrol A. Smereski would have celebrated 50 years of married life together on November 27.
Remembered as being active with his children’s sporting endeavors, Mr. Macri coached little league baseball for over 50 years, and also coached for the Mountain Top Junior football league, and high school sports, touching many lives in his tenure as coach for various youth sporting organizations, including the Dolphins, Jets and Blitz teams. He was proud to have coached two District 16 Little League Championship teams in 1976 and 1981. John was a loving “Grandpa” whose recent highlights were coaching and attending his grandsons sporting events, as well as attending his little princess, Aubrey’s piano recitals.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Christopher, and more recently by brothers, Robert J., David F. and James P. Macri.
Surviving, in addition to his dear wife, Carrol, at home, are children, Paula Jean Macri and her companion, Robert Monell, Tampa, Fla.; John A. Macri III and his wife, Nadine, Mountain Top; and Joseph Macri, at home; grandchildren, Johnny IV; Michael and Aubrey Macri; brothers, Joseph A. Macri and his wife, Maureen, Manassas, Va.; and Donald E. Macri, Harveys Lake; sisters, including Carol R. Wasco and her husband, Tony and Ann Marie Macri, all of Wilkes-Barre Township; Jean E. Aftewicz and her husband, John, Wilkes-Barre; and Patti Clark and her husband, Doug, Poolsville, Md.; sisters-in-law, Debbie Macri, Mountain Top; Patricia Macri, Carlsbad, Calif.; and Dorothy Macri, Mountain Top; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. An avid pet lover, also left to mourn his loss are his beloved dogs Toby and Mia.
