Senior Anna Dessoye and freshman Linnea Gonzales of the ninth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (5-3, 1-0 Big Ten) earned their second Big Ten weekly honors of the year.
Dessoye, a graduate of Crestwood High School, was voted Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in her career and Gonzales was named Freshman of the Week. The duo took the same honors on Sept. 1.
Dessoye led the Terrapins with three goals and an assist in their two victories this weekend. Against No. 12 Northwestern, she tied the game for Maryland with a goal off a penalty corner in the 33rd minute. In the second half, she found Gonzales for the go-ahead score in the 44th minute, then scored herself 48 seconds later for a two-goal lead.
Against New Hampshire, Dessoye scored Maryland’s fourth goal when she flipped in a rebounded shot with 3:03 left before halftime. She leads the Terrapins in points with 16 points off of five goals and six assists so far this season.
Gonzales scored Maryland’s game-winning goal in the Terrapins’ 3-2 win over No. 12 Northwestern. With the game tied at one eight minutes into the second half, Gonzales took a pass from Dessoye, created space and cracked a hard shot into the low part of the cage for the go-ahead score. She is the Terrapins’ leading scorer with six goals so far this season.
