The Crestwood gridders opened the 2015 season in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 3A with a disappointing 34-14 loss to Berwick. The defending District 2 champion Comets were dominated by the Bulldogs after having notched two wins over the Dawgs last season.
The Crestwood ground game never really got going as they finished the game with only 36 yards on 20 carries and 96 yards of total offense.
Crestwood wingback Tanner Kahlau scored both touchdowns for the Comets, the first coming on an 87-yard run on the opening kickoff. Kahlau tacked on his second TD at 6:43 in the third quarter on a 14-yard run.
Comet kicker Connor Keenan was perfect in point after attempts.
The score was knotted at 14-14 to open the final stanza but the Berwick blew the game open, scoring 20 unanswered points for the win.
Berwick senior Daquan Hellenthal carried 13 times for 182 yards and scored on an 81-yard touchdown run to lead the Bulldogs.
Crestwood suffered its second loss of the 2015 season to host Abington Heights last Saturday, September 12. Abington capitalized on four turnovers by Crestwood to capture a 31-13 win.
Abington opened the scoring in the first quarter when Colin McCreary intercepted a pass by Crestwood QB Seamus Rother and returned it for a 73-yard touchdown.
Abington lit up the scoreboard again in the second quarter when defensive back Brian Bauman recovered a Crestwood fumble to set up another TD eight plays later. Abington tacked on another score following another Rother interception. A 32-yard field goal by McCreary gave Abington a 17-0 lead at the half.
Crestwood started the second half with an offensive spark, scoring two touchdowns in the first seven minutes of play. The first came on a 7-yard pass completion from Rother to Connor Sheloski. The second came on a fumble recovery by Sheloski who rambled 65 yards for the score, Crestwood cut the Abington lead to 17-13 at the end of the fourth stanza.
Abington took over the fourth quarter, scoring two more touchdowns to pull away for the win.
Crestwood ended the day with 286 total yards compared with 233 for Abington. Two fumbles and two interception stymied the Crestwood offense.
For Crestwood, Tanner Kahlau rushed for 78 yards on 14 carries. Sheloski caught five passes for 109 yards. Passing, Rother finished 8-16-2-138.
