Peggy A. Burke died Sept. 4, 2015 at her home in Mountain Top.
Mrs. Burke was born June 2, 1930 in Brooklyn, N. Y. She was the daughter of the late James A. and Ann Shaw O’Brien. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from St. Joseph’s College for Women in Brooklyn, and a Master of Arts degree in education from Wilkes College. She and her family moved to Mountaintop from Queens, N. Y., in 1958. She was a teacher in the Crestwood School District for 21 years at Rice and Fairview elementary schools.
Peggy was a member of St. Michael’s Traditional Latin Parish in Scranton and St. Jude’s Parish in Mountain Top. She belonged to the Ladies of Charity and to the Choir and Altar and Rosary Society at St. Jude’s. She was a volunteer for 20 years at Pennsylvanians for Human Life in Wilkes-Barre.
Her husband of 62 years, John A. Burke, died last October.
She is survived her daughter, Mary Pat Galasso and her husband, Paul of Suffern, N. Y.; son, Kevin and his wife, Jill, Elkton, Md.; son, Emmet and his wife, Mary Ruth, Wilkes-Barre; son, Thomas and his wife, Jane, California, Md.; and Gene and his wife, Joan, Midlothian, Va.; and 16 grandchildren; and four great-grand children.
She was buried from St. Jude’s Church, Mountain Top.
McCune Funeral Home, Mountain Top, handled the arrangements.
