Children in elementary and middle-school grades are invited to attend a special STEM Saturday at Sem Event to take part in a program titled “Cardboard Challenge/Sem Day of Play.” The program will be held on Saturday, October 3 at Wyoming Seminary Lower School, 1560 Wyoming Avenue, Forty Fort.

The event will begin at 9:00 a. m. and end at 11:30 a. m. and is free and open to the public.

This program is based on the worldwide Global Day of Play event on October 3, which is organized by The Imagination Foundation. The Foundation has issued The Global Cardboard Challenge which invites children around the world to design and build their own creations using cardboard, recycled materials and their imagination, in the days before the Challenge.

The Challenge was inspired by the 2012 film “Caine’s Arcade,” which tells the story of Caine Monroy, a nine-year-old boy in East Los Angeles, who built his own arcade using cardboard boxes, toys, tape and recycled materials. The video went viral on the Internet and received widespread national and international attention, as well as coverage in national newspapers and on television network news programs.

Children who take part in the Sem Day of Play on October 3 will explore the interactions between science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics by playing games designed and constructed from reused cardboard. They are encouraged to begin building their own cardboard projects in advance and bring their creations to the event to share with the group. During the program they also will have the opportunity to create cardboard games and interactive structures.

In addition, children are encouraged to watch “Caine’s Arcade” at http://cainesarcade.com,and to learn more about the Cardboard Challenge at www.imagination. is/cardboard_ challenge.

This STEM Saturday at Sem event is an aspect of the STEM School’s programming which includes a foundational science course for Sem freshmen, several science electives related to robotics and public lectures on issues dealing with science, technology, engineering and math.

The Louis Maslow STEM School at Wyoming Seminary seeks to engage and inspire students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through holistic and integrated paths of study. Students in the program will be prepared for collegiate study and able to respond to rapidly changing global challenges and advances in technology in today’s world.
