MMI Preparatory School in Freeland, conducted its 123rd Commencement Exercises on May 21, as seniors were awarded diplomas by Stanley B. Warner III ’92, chairman of MMI’s Board of Directors.
This year’s graduating class of 43 seniors amassed more than $6.9 million in merit scholarships and awards, an average of more than $150,000 per student. The 2015 graduating class also attained an average SAT score of 1713. The Class of 2015’s average ACT score is 25.
Joleen N. Beltrami ’82, Ph. D., associate professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, delivered the commencement address. Beltrami joined the faculty of UIW in 2009 as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics. She was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in 2014. She teaches undergraduate and graduate statistics courses at UIW, and worked to establish a minor program in Actuarial Science, which began in the fall of 2014.
Beltrami addressed the graduates on the topic of change. She said they should expect change and not be afraid of it, and that change doesn’t equate to failure.
During commencement exercises, valedictorianClaireJ. Sheen of Mountaintop spoke to her fellow graduates about school being a series of beautiful distractions that helped shape who she is and gave her the opportunity to know her classmates. She quoted the popular 80’s tune “Never Gonna Give You Up” in telling her classmates that she’s never going to give them up, or let them down. She further noted that her classmates are her favorite distractions.
Class president Emily R. Seratch shared some of the unique memories she has of the senior class, and said that while outwardly it may not look like the class of 2015 was together, they very much were. She thanked them for all their help and support and said, “I’m not going to say goodbye, I’m going to say see you later, because I cannot say goodbye to the people who made me who I am today.”
Salutatorian Hayden C. Francis also addressed his classmates, noting that time is precious not only in its passing but for the fact that every single moment should be treasured because time is not infinite. He told the class, “Now is our time.”
