The Crestwood captured the PIAA District 2 Boys Lacrosse Championship with a 14-9 win over host Dallas on May 21. The Comets and Mountaineers were tied with 7-3 records in the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 play during the regular season.
The teams both battled back and fourth in the first three quarters, with Dallas knotting the score midway through the third. Crestwood scored again to enter the fourth quarter up by one. It was all Crestwood in the final stanza, outscoring their opponents 6 to 2.
Jay Popson powered the Comets’ scoring attack with five goals, followed by Ryan Magin with four goals and two assists.
Robert Coslett followed with two goals and two assists, while Andrew Bobynskyj scored two goals and added an assist. Joey Grandinetti scored one goal for the winners.
Midfielder Tanner Kahlua, along with defenders Dan Frascella, John Majdic and Conner Keenan, were instrumental in keeping Dallas in check. Crestwood is scheduled to square off against the third-place team from District 1, in the opening round of the state tournament on Wednesday, May 27.
Crestwood advanced into the championship game by defeating Delaware Valley, 6-5, in the District 2 Semi-Final played at Delaware Valley High School on May 18.
Popson and Coslett led Crestwood in scoring with two goals each. Lance Lysiak and Zach Anderson added a goal apiece.
Bobynskyj recorded two assists, while Ryan Magin had one assist.
Goalkeeper Bailey Bauman saved seven in the win.
Dallas hosted Crestwood in the District 2 Champsion game played on May 21.
