With the warm weather arriving, it’s peak season for businesses like Around Town Bicycles and, according to the shop’s owner, many of its customers are Mountain Top residents looking to take up the hobby.
Tom Jones and Rich Adams have owned Around Town Bicycles, at 59 North Main St. in Wilkes-Barre, since 2004. Both avid bicyclists, they saw a local need for a bike shop and the business has been popular ever since.
“It’s been a lifetime activity and occupation for me,” Tom says of cycling. “You meet a lot of fun, interesting people, it’s healthy, and it’s just a fun business.”
Tom grew up in his family’s bicycle shop, Sickler’s in Wilkes-Barre, which closed in 1996. He went on to establish Around Town Bicycles with Rich, who designs custom bicycles and is a repair technician.
In Mountain Top, many residents bike the Black Diamond Trail, which starts on Route 437 in Wright Township and extends to White Haven. The 10-mile trail was opened two years ago and is well used by locals, who bike, walk, and run there.
“A lot of our customers are people from Mountain Top,” Tom relates. He continued to point out many of his patrons are adults who rode bicycles as children and are looking to take up the hobby again.
At Around Town Bicycles,
customers get individualized attention, Tom adds. “We find out what the needs and interests of the customers are,” he says.
The shop sells a number of different styles of bicycles, from mountain bikes and commuter bikes to hybrids and children’s styles. It offers specialty brands, including Raleigh, Lapierre, and Quintanta Roo.
In addition to bikes, Around Town Bicycles sells accessories, such as helmets, clothing, shoes, carracks, tires, and bicycle parts. Customers can have their bikes serviced and repaired at the shop, as well.
The shop also organizes weekly group rides, for pros and beginners, to gather at various locations and bike together.
