MMI Preparatory School senior Claire Sheen has been awarded the Joseph Adams Senior Scholarship from the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) or Spanish National Honor Society. Only 60 high school seniors are recognized for this honor, which comes with a $1,000 college scholarship. Sheen won this award after the society looked at her activities during her time in MMI’s upper school.
Sheen, daughter of Kwangsup and Chaeyun Sheen, Mountaintop, submitted a persuasive essay written in Spanish and a five-minute unedited video conversation in the language between herself and her Spanish teacher, Dennis Clarke. The video was about her experiences in and out of Spanish class and her future plans.
Clarke commented that Sheen has worked very hard to achieve this award. “Claire is passionate about her work in and out of class. She truly deserves this honor from the Sociedad and the scholarship will surely go to great use,” Clarke said.
The SHH is an honor society for high school students enrolled in Spanish and/or Portuguese, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
The SHH was formally organized as the Spanish National Honor Society in 1953. The name was changed to Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica in 1959. At present there are more than 2,000 national and international chapters of the SHH.
For over 130 years, MMI Preparatory School has been providing dedicated area students with a comprehensive and inspiring 6th through 12th grade college preparatory program that maximizes each individual’s academic, social and character potential in preparation for success in college and beyond.
