The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on December 30 the flu reached epidemic levels in the United States with 15 children dying from complications. According to the CDC, there are multiple strains of the flu circulating. The vaccine protects against at least three strains of the current virus.
“The old saying ‘prevention is worth a pound of cure’ is particularly true when it comes to the flu vaccine,” says Ray Roth, D. O., MBA, vice president and chief medical officer for Geisinger Health Plan. “The flu can lead to life-threatening complications including pneumonia. It’s better to get vaccinated than get the flu. Plus the flu vaccine is safe. You can’t get the flu from the vaccine.”
Geisinger Health Plan will be holding flu clinics in January to help protect individuals against the flu. The flu clinic is located at Geisinger Health Plans Insurance Store, 2266 Wilkes-Barre Township Marketplace (Walmart shopping plaza), Wilkes-Barre. Flu shots are available to individuals over the age of 18 and are free to the public. The clinics for January are:
Mondays from 2 to 6 p. m. Wednesdays from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m. Saturdays from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. Individuals can also call 866-415-
